The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has replaced traffic light timers at 96 major intersections with an adaptive signaling system that uses sensors.
Instead of timers, the green light now blinks five times before turning yellow for three seconds, then red.
MMDA Chairman Romando Artes said the old timer system had become inconsistent, sometimes skipping signals.
The new system aims to prevent drivers from speeding to beat the lights and improve traffic flow.
Artes also addressed concerns that the new setup might be a “trap” under the no-contact apprehension policy, dismissing these fears.
