MISAMIS GOV. UNDER FIRE FOR JOKES ABOUT NURSES AND DANCERS DURING CAMPAIGN

Misamis Oriental Gov. Peter Unabia issued an apology to nurses after facing backlash for saying only “beautiful women” should become nurses, claiming the remarks were meant as a joke to energize a campaign crowd.

Speaking at a flag ceremony, Unabia said he valued nurses’ work but then doubled down by defending the use of “sexy dancers” over “chubby ones” at campaign events and stating that workplace preferences based on appearance are a reality.

He urged critics not to be “onion-skinned” over his comments. The Commission on Elections has issued a show-cause order requiring Unabia to explain within three days why he should not be disqualified or face election offense charges.

The Comelec order also includes Unabia’s alleged racist remarks against Maranaos and Muslims during another campaign speech.
