The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is planning to transform Metro Manila into a “sponge city” to better absorb and store excess rainwater.
The plan includes green buildings, permeable pavements, underground reservoirs, wetlands, parks, and green roofs to manage floodwaters.
MMDA Chairman Romando Artes discussed the concept with the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) on September 4.
The project may involve in-city resettlement and community-based solid waste management to support water retention efforts.
The MMDA and AIIB also talked about Phase 1 of the Flood Management Project, which focuses on improving solid waste management in Metro Manila communities.
