Meta has announced sweeping changes to its content moderation policies, including ending its U.S. fact-checking program on Facebook and Instagram, in favor of a “community notes” system similar to X (formerly Twitter).
CEO Mark Zuckerberg cited political bias and declining trust as reasons for the shift, aligning with concerns raised by Republicans and incoming U.S. President Donald Trump.
The changes include relocating trust and safety teams to Texas and appointing figures like former Republican official Joel Kaplan to leadership roles, moves widely seen as concessions to the new administration.
Critics, including the International Fact-Checking Network, warn the decision will harm efforts to curb misinformation, but Meta argues the overhaul will rebuild user trust.
The announcement signals a sharp departure from previous policies and a closer alignment with Trump’s administration on content moderation and platform governance.
