The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) is set to implement a rate hike in October, driven by heightened generation charges.
Meralco will make an upward adjustment of P0.42 per kilowatt hour (kWh) for October, resulting in an overall rate of P11.82 per kWh for a typical household, up from September’s P11.39.
For a household consuming an average of 200 kWh monthly, this translates to an approximate P84 increase in their total electricity bill.
Meralco explained that the rise in rates can be attributed to the higher costs of fuel, which affected independent power producers and power supply agreements in September.
Additionally, charges from the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market witnessed a slight increase, further contributing to the overall uptick in rates.
Furthermore, transmission charges for residential customers also experienced an increase due to higher ancillary service charges.
Overall, these factors have led to the adjustment in Meralco’s power rates for October, resulting in an increase in costs for consumers.
