Mary Jane Veloso was formally released from the Correctional Institution for Women on Friday after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. granted her an absolute pardon.
Bureau of Corrections Director General Gregorio Pio Catapang Jr. personally handed Veloso her pardon document and official release order, completing the administrative process for her discharge.
Veloso had been detained for nearly 15 years after being arrested in Indonesia in 2010 and sentenced to death for drug trafficking after authorities found 2.6 kilograms of heroin in her luggage.
She was transferred to the Philippines in December 2024 under an agreement with Indonesia after her execution was stayed in 2015 following a last-minute appeal by the Philippine government.
BuCor said Veloso will be endorsed to her local government in Nueva Ecija for reintegration support, including livelihood assistance, counseling, and skills development, as she returns to her family and community.
