A maritime law expert has urged the Philippine government to conduct regular patrols around Escoda Shoal, also known as Sabina Shoal, to assert its rights amidst ongoing tensions with China.
Jay Batongbacal of the University of the Philippines emphasized the need for Manila to be firm in asserting its claims despite Chinese interference.
The BRP Teresa Magbanua, the Philippine Coast Guard’s largest vessel, had to return to port after being damaged and facing supply issues during its deployment.
Batongbacal noted that while the vessel’s pullout does not signify surrender, the government should continue regular patrols and address illegal activities within the Philippine exclusive economic zone.
The Philippine Coast Guard plans to deploy another vessel to the area to continue monitoring and safeguarding the shoal.
