President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. urged lawmakers to pass a “balanced” Anti-Fake News and Digital Disinformation Act that addresses the spread of false information while protecting freedom of speech, Malacañang said Tuesday.
The call came during a Legislative-Executive Development Advisory Council (Ledac) meeting, where Marcos emphasized the need to clearly define what constitutes fake news and disinformation.
Speaker Faustino “Bojie” Dy III backed the measure, warning that unchecked digital falsehoods threaten democracy, national security, and the welfare of Filipino youth.
The House of Representatives supports House Bill 2697, authored by House Majority Leader Ferdinand Alexander “Sandro” Marcos, which aims to establish a legal framework to combat fake news while upholding constitutional rights.
Malacañang stressed that the president will not allow any law to trample on citizens’ freedom of expression or civil liberties.
