MARCOS EYES FILIPINO-MADE ELECTRIC VEHICLES

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. expressed optimism that the Philippines will soon manufacture its own electric vehicles as the government seeks to reduce dependence on imported petroleum products and protect the economy from global price shocks.

During his visit to Filipino-owned automotive parts manufacturer MD Juan Enterprises Inc. in Caloocan, Marcos inspected its facilities. He discussed the equipment and technical support needed for local EV production.

He said the government aims to eventually produce Filipino-made electric vehicles, tricycles, and possibly electric jeepneys.

The company, which has operated for about 60 years, is a beneficiary of the Department of Science and Technology’s Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program, which provides financial and technical assistance to improve productivity and create jobs.

The initiative is expected to strengthen local manufacturing, preserve Filipino jeepney heritage, create quality employment, and support the country’s transition toward cleaner and more energy-independent transportation.
