‘LIBRENG SAKAY’ PROJECT LAUNCHED TO HELP CEBU COMMUTERS

Cebu City launched the “Libreng Sakay” program on July 23, offering free jeepney rides to commuters along the busy 01K route serving Parkmall, Mandaue City-Urgello, and Cebu City.

The Department of Transportation, led by Secretary Vince Dizon, said the service will operate during peak hours from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., including weekends and holidays.

The free rides are open to all passengers, not just students or employees, aiming to ease commuting for many Cebu residents.

The program mobilizes 115 modern jeepney units, with the government providing financial assistance and allocating about P350,000 daily for operations.

An annual budget of P150 million to P160 million has been set aside, but the program’s end date has yet to be determined.
