LEGARDA BATS FOR EXPANDED SUPPORT FOR CREATIVE ECONOMY

Sen. Loren Legarda called for stronger protection and investment in Filipino culture and creativity, saying growth in the creative economy should provide sustainable livelihoods and wider opportunities for creative workers.

The Philippine creative economy reached P2.12 trillion in 2025, up 6.9 percent from the previous year and accounting for 7.6 percent of gross domestic product, while supporting 8.71 million jobs.

Legarda said artists, artisans, and cultural workers need better access to training, financing, markets, and institutions that can help them build sustainable careers.

She cited her efforts to promote local crafts and cultural preservation, including the National Arts and Crafts Fair, and proposed measures covering culture, culinary heritage, indigenous writing systems, music, and traditional arts.

Legarda stressed that protecting Filipino culture and strengthening the creative economy must go hand in hand to ensure traditions survive while creating better economic opportunities for Filipinos.
