PhilHealth reported that a significant majority of breast cancer cases in the Philippines are diagnosed at an advanced stage, lowering survival rates.
Only 1 percent of Filipino women have undergone screening, contributing to one of the highest breast cancer mortality rates in Asia.
In 2024, there were 33,079 cases of breast cancer, making it the most common cancer in the country, with 65 percent diagnosed late.
PhilHealth urged women to use its Z Benefit package, now covering up to P1.4 million for treatment from stages 0 to 4, and also offers coverage for mammograms and breast ultrasounds through its Yakap program.
The agency stressed early detection is crucial, as most breast cancer cases show no symptoms in the early stages.
