LARGE NUMBER OF OFWS IN LEBANON RESIST LEAVING AMID CRISIS

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) reported that only about 1,000 of the 11,000 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Lebanon have opted for repatriation amid rising tensions in the country.

Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Eduardo de Vega emphasized the urgency for OFWs to decide on repatriation while travel options remain available, as future conflicts could close the airport. Of the 1,000 who requested a return, 356 have already been repatriated.

The Philippine government will cover travel costs for those choosing to leave, as Beirut is under Alert Level 3 for voluntary repatriation.

The Philippine Embassy in Lebanon and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) also held a consular outreach in Zahle to assist OFWs with documentation and welfare benefits.
