Sen. Lito Lapid backed the new law fixing the terms of barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) officials at five years.
Lapid said the measure could save the government billions of pesos that could be used to assist sectors affected by rising fuel and commodity prices.
Republic Act No. 12326 set the next barangay and SK elections for November 2028, with succeeding elections to be held every five years.
Lapid said the longer fixed terms would help reduce expenses related to frequent elections.
He also said he respects the legal challenge filed by lawyer Romy Macalintal before the Supreme Court questioning the law and the 2028 election schedule.
