Some contractors with close ties to corrupt local officials have reportedly secured flood control projects without public bidding, according to Quirino Governor Dakila Carlo Cua.
Cua cited a mayor in his province who prioritized expensive flood control projects over more urgent local needs like hospitals and roads, with contractors allegedly “buying” these projects ahead of official approval.
In response to ongoing controversies, over 70 mayors have formed the “Mayors for Good Governance” coalition, promoting transparency and accountability in public works.
Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte said at least 141 flood control projects are under review for irregularities, many of which were implemented without local government consultation.
Meanwhile, officials like Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong praised President Marcos’ efforts to fight corruption but stressed the need for real results, including convictions of those involved.
