The House of Representatives has recognized Senate President Pro Tempore Sherwin Gatchalian as Senate leader, despite Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano’s refusal to step down from the position.
Speaker Faustino Dy III congratulated Gatchalian and expressed confidence in his leadership to uphold the Senate’s constitutional duties with integrity and independence.
House Deputy Speaker Paolo Ortega V said the chamber hopes the Senate’s internal dispute will be resolved soon and warned it could delay the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.
Ortega noted that several institutions, including Malacañang and the Integrated Bar of the Philippines, have also acknowledged Gatchalian’s leadership.
The House also said it is open to holding a special session with the Senate to pass priority measures if requested by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
