FISHER GROUPS CALL FOR PROTECTION AS SEA TENSIONS PERSIST

Tensions stemming from China’s activities in the West Philippine Sea continue to threaten the livelihood of Filipino fisherfolk, Pangisda-Pilipinas chairman Pablo Rosales said, citing fear, poverty, and limited government support.

Rosales acknowledged China’s assistance to a stranded Filipino fisherman near Bajo de Masinloc as a humanitarian act, but stressed that territorial disputes and heightened military activities have discouraged small-scale fishers from venturing into traditional fishing grounds.

He urged the government to better protect fishermen’s rights and adopt a balanced approach that prioritizes humanitarian cooperation while safeguarding national interests.

Meanwhile, civic leader Jose Antonio Goitia warned against viewing the rescue as a simple act of kindness, saying it was used to mask a broader pattern of intrusion within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone.

Goitia emphasized that humanitarian gestures should not undermine Philippine sovereignty, calling for a firm, law-based defense of the country’s maritime rights.
