The Department of Agriculture (DA) has extended the issuance period for fish import permits until the end of June to help stabilize supply and prevent price hikes.
Originally, import permits were valid from March to May, but the extension gives importers more time to bring in frozen fish and seafood, including varieties not caught locally.
Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. emphasized that the move aims to support the food service industry without harming local fishermen.
The DA also set a May 23 deadline for eligible importers to apply for their combined import allocations, which will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
Importers must meet specific accreditation requirements, and those with pending violations or incomplete documents are disqualified from participating.
