Speaker Martin Romualdez urged the 67 million Filipino voters to practice discernment and maintain vigilance in selecting candidates for the upcoming midterm elections.
He emphasized the importance of their role in ensuring that elected leaders embody integrity and competence, using the recent disqualification of dismissed Bamban, Tarlac mayor Alice Guo as a cautionary example.
As the Commission on Elections (Comelec) begins accepting certificates of candidacy, Romualdez highlighted the need for the agency to uphold the integrity of the electoral process.
He called on the Comelec to utilize legal measures, such as disqualification petitions, to address any concerns regarding unqualified candidates.
Romualdez concluded by urging all relevant agencies to remain vigilant during the candidacy filing period to prevent similar embarrassments for the nation.
