Filipino para-athletes who triumphed at the 4th Asian Para Games received a hero’s welcome and financial rewards from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Wednesday.
The President, alongside the Philippine Sports Commission, awarded a total of P13.45 million to the medalists, on top of their mandated incentives under Republic Act 10699. The athletes brought home 19 medals – 10 golds, 4 silvers, and 5 bronzes – from the games.
Marcos Jr. commended the para-athletes for their achievements and inspirational spirit, stating, “You are a special category because not only do you bring glory to the country, but you also inspire the nation. If they can win medals despite their conditions, then surely we, ordinary Filipinos, can achieve even more.”
The ceremony coincided with the Philippine Sports Commission’s 34th anniversary, where Marcos Jr. praised the agency for its commitment to inclusivity and mainstreaming sports across all aspects of Filipino life. He emphasized the importance of supporting underrepresented groups like para-athletes in achieving true inclusivity in sports.
