Farmers in Central Luzon gathered last week to protest the significant drop in palay prices, urging President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to take action.
During the peak season, traders were purchasing palay at as low as P11 to P15 per kilogram, putting farmers in a difficult financial situation.
Despite initial opposition from local authorities, the rally proceeded with around 2,000 attendees, far fewer than the 45,000 farmers expected.
Farmer leader Argel Cabatbat criticized the Rice Tarrification Law and called on the government for assistance, highlighting the growing debt burden on farmers.
He also disputed claims by the Department of Agriculture that palay prices were stable, accusing traders of manipulating the market.
