Health experts have assured the public there is no cause for alarm despite the detection of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in the Philippines, following a rise in respiratory infections in China.
Infectious disease specialist Dr. Rontgene Solante emphasized that HMPV is not comparable to COVID-19 in severity or hospitalization rates, with most cases being mild and resolving in a few days.
Health Secretary Ted Herbosa noted that HMPV accounted for 5.8% of influenza-like illnesses (ILI) in 2024 but reported no unusual clustering or patterns.
The Department of Health attributed a 17% drop in ILI cases to improved health practices, with Rhinovirus and Enterovirus being the most common culprits.
Experts advise preventive measures like handwashing, avoiding crowded spaces, and wearing masks, especially for the elderly and immunocompromised.
