EX-ATENEO COACH DEARNS LEAVES PH AS PROBE INTO PLAYERS’ DEATHS CONTINUES

Former Ateneo Blue Eagles strength and conditioning coach Grant Dearns left the Philippines on June 10, two days after the deaths of student-athletes Rene Clert Baterbonia and Divine Adili during a training camp in Aurora.

The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group has recommended filing charges for alleged violations of the Anti-Hazing Act against former head coach Tab Baldwin, Dearns, and other team staff members.

Immigration authorities said no lookout bulletin or hold-departure order had been issued against Dearns before he departed for New Zealand.

Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla said the Department of Justice should examine possible criminal liability and negligence on the part of university officials in connection with the deaths.

Meanwhile, the Department of Labor and Employment is reviewing the employment status of Baldwin, with another hearing scheduled on July 9.
