The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has relaunched its “Angel Pets” program in partnership with the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) to promote the benefits of animal-assisted therapy.
DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian expressed optimism that the program will demonstrate the positive effects of therapy using animals in the Philippines, especially in rehabilitation and reintegration efforts for vulnerable groups.
The program, which started in October 2024, includes three components: ALAGA (care), ARAL (learn), and LUNAS SURI (healing assessment), focusing on therapeutic support and awareness.
The pilot program began in November 2024 at the Marillac Hills Center for Girls and has since expanded to include women at the Sanctuary Center.
Both DSWD and PAWS hope this collaboration will enhance trust in animal-assisted therapy as a sustainable and effective rehabilitation method.
