The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has noted a decline in the number of Filipinos abroad registering for the May 2025 midterm elections.
Currently, there are 1.18 million registered overseas voters, falling short of the 1.486 million target.
Comelec Chairman George Garcia attributed the shortfall to difficulties such as work commitments and distance from registration sites.
However, he expressed hope that the introduction of internet voting and satellite registration activities by Philippine posts abroad will boost registration numbers.
Comelec spokesperson John Rex Laudiangco added that many potential voters were deactivated due to non-participation in previous elections, though 400,000 new applications have been received.
