The Department of Transportation announced plans to enhance road safety for cyclists and pedestrians, emphasizing the importance of creating safe and inclusive road spaces.
Acting Secretary Giovanni Lopez, speaking during National Bike Day 2025, said the agency will expand bike and pedestrian lanes to protect non-motorized road users.
The initiative aligns with directives from President Marcos Jr. under the National Transport Policy and the Philippine Development Plan 2023–2028.
Lopez stressed that cyclists are legitimate road users who deserve safe, adequate space to travel to school, work, and other destinations.
The DOTr noted that pedestrians and cyclists remain among the most at-risk road users, with pedestrians accounting for a significant portion of road crash fatalities and injuries in Metro Manila.
