The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has identified the artificial dolomite beach along Manila Bay and the ongoing Metro Rail Transit Line 7 (MRT-7) construction as causes of flooding in parts of the capital.
Flooding along Taft and Commonwealth Avenues is linked to the closure of three outflows during Manila Bay’s rehabilitation and MRT-7 columns blocking drainage inlets, MMDA Chairman Romando Artes said.
The dolomite beach project involved closing outflows to redirect wastewater to a treatment plant, but its limited capacity has caused water to accumulate on the roads.
Mayor Isko Moreno and Artes recently oversaw the removal of one outfall barrier to alleviate flooding, with plans to remove another.
MMDA also inspected MRT-7’s Batasan station, where construction columns have been obstructing drainage and contributing to floods.
