DOJ PLANS TO BASE DRUG WAR CASE ON HOUSE REPORT FINDINGS

The Department of Justice (DOJ) announced it will begin a preliminary investigation into the killings of high-profile individuals during former President Rodrigo Duterte’s drug war, following a House of Representatives report on the matter.

Justice Undersecretary Raul Vasquez indicated that the DOJ could initiate the investigation based on complaints from the police or private individuals, emphasizing the need for an initiatory process.

Garma’s testimony before the House committee implicated former police officials in the alleged killings, raising concerns about extrajudicial actions taken during the drug war.

Lawmakers highlighted that Garma’s revelations are just the “tip of the iceberg,” suggesting there is much more to uncover regarding the inner workings of the drug war.

Meanwhile, former President Duterte has been invited to clarify his role in the allegations, with the committee preparing questions for him should he choose to attend the inquiry.
