The Department of Health (DOH) is stepping up efforts to combat the rise in pertussis cases across the Philippines, with 453 reported cases and 35 deaths so far, compared to 23 cases last year. Quezon City has already declared an outbreak, and Iloilo City may follow suit.
The increase in cases is attributed to a decline in immunization rates, particularly during the pandemic.
Health centers will remain open during Holy Week to administer pertussis vaccines. In addition, non-selective immunization will be implemented in BARMM to address the measles outbreak, ensuring that all children are vaccinated regardless of previous vaccination status.
This approach aims to expedite the vaccination process and alleviate vaccine hesitancy concerns among residents.
