The Department of Education has increased the annual salary subsidy for private school teachers to P24,000 under the GASTPE program, effective this school year.
This P6,000 raise, a 33% increase, was approved by the State Assistance Council on July 31 to help address the wage gap between private and public school teachers.
Private school teachers often face lower and inconsistent pay compared to their public school counterparts, many without guaranteed salary increases.
Education Secretary Sonny Angara acknowledged this disparity and emphasized the government’s commitment to narrowing the gap and improving private education.
The subsidy supports teachers who participate in the Education Service Contracting scheme, which helps low-income students attend private schools through government tuition assistance.
