The Department of Agriculture (DA) will raffle off a portion of unused fish import permits to top importers to boost market supply and help lower retail prices.
Around 6,600 metric tons of the previously authorized 22,000 MT import allocation remain unutilized, prompting the move, according to Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel.
The DA had earlier issued permits for various fish species under Memorandum Orders Nos. 12, 46, and 47, but tight timelines and supply constraints prevented full utilization.
Prices of imported galunggong have surged to ₱310 per kilo, while local varieties reach ₱347, though mackerel prices are expected to drop with new shipments.
Laurel encouraged consumers to consider alternative proteins, while the raffle aims to ensure faster fish importation and stabilize market prices.
