Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. has ordered an investigation into the alleged smuggling of carrots, broccoli, and other highland vegetables following reports of imported broccoli being sold in Baguio City and La Trinidad, Benguet.
Authorities found three stalls selling imported broccoli at Baguio Hangar Market, including one with a box labeled “Product of China.”
The Department of Agriculture said the alleged smuggling could hurt local farmers as buyers turn to cheaper imported produce.
Tiu Laurel vowed to punish those found in violation of the Anti-Agricultural Economic Sabotage Law.
The DA will also conduct joint inspections with relevant agencies to verify import documents, quarantine compliance, and food safety requirements.
