The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has launched the Philippines’ first glycogen extraction facility in Tacloban City, converting green mussels into high-value glycogen for use in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and food industries.
The P8-million facility, funded primarily by DOST-PCAARRD, aims to boost socio-economic development in Eastern Visayas and is located on the University of the Philippines property in Barangay New Kawayan.
This project also offers a solution to red tide occurrences, allowing mussel meat to be processed into glycogen even when consumption is prohibited due to contamination.
DOST officials highlight the initiative’s potential to support mussel farmers and local communities while promoting sustainable production and innovation.
The facility is expected to advance regional economic growth and industrial applications despite the ongoing environmental challenges.
