The Commission on Elections (Comelec) in the Philippines plans to delist party-list organizations that have failed to secure a seat in the House of Representatives in the country’s two most recent elections.
According to Comelec spokesperson John Rex Laudiangco, a resolution will be issued to remove party-lists that have participated and lost twice, under the Party-list Act.
The Comelec aims to reduce the number of party-list groups participating in the 2025 midterm elections to around 130, ensuring that only the most qualified and representative groups are included.
The Party-List System Act states that only registered parties, organizations, or coalitions can participate in the party-list elections, and their registration can be canceled if they fail to participate or obtain at least two percent of the votes in the last two preceding elections.
The deadline for political parties and party-list organizations to register for the 2025 polls is December 29, 2023.
