The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has begun destroying 6.7 million invalid official ballots printed for the May 12 midterm elections.
The process started with tearing the ballots, which will take about 10 days, before they are melted at a site in Pampanga to ensure they cannot be reused.
These invalid ballots include those that are damaged, smudged, discolored, or improperly printed, identified through both machine and physical checks.
Compared to the last elections, the number of invalid ballots more than doubled due to increased printing errors and a temporary restraining order.
Meanwhile, only one senatorial candidate and four party-list groups have filed their required Statements of Contributions and Expenditures (SOCEs) as the June 11 deadline approaches.
