The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has expressed full support for a bill seeking to reform the country’s party-list system.
Chairman George Garcia said the commission has long awaited changes to the law, calling the proposed measure “timely and a long time coming.”
The bill, filed by Sen. Vicente Sotto III, aims to restore the original purpose of the system, which was to give marginalized sectors a voice in Congress but has since been abused by the wealthy and powerful.
Poll watchdog Kontra Daya also welcomed the move, citing decades of research showing how influential groups have hijacked the system for political gain.
The group offered to provide lawmakers with data and recommendations to ensure meaningful reforms are implemented.
