The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) announced plans to open five new medical schools in 2024, offering free programs to underprivileged Filipino students.
This initiative aims to boost the nation’s healthcare workforce and address gaps in underserved areas.
CHED Chairman Prospero de Vera III emphasized the goal of producing “world-class doctors and nurses” through these expansions. He added that this builds on the eight medical schools approved during the first year of the Marcos administration, bringing the total to 24 public universities offering such programs across the country.
Beyond public institutions, CHED is also collaborating with private medical schools to extend scholarships to qualified students. De Vera highlighted the importance of “return service” agreements with graduates, ensuring their commitment to serve in areas with critical healthcare needs.
This expansion marks a significant step towards addressing the Philippines’ persistent shortage of medical professionals. With a growing number of free medical programs and targeted service commitments, CHED hopes to improve healthcare access and quality for underserved communities.
