OpenAI announced it will start testing advertisements on ChatGPT in the coming weeks to help offset its rising operational costs.
Ads will initially appear for free and lower-tier users in the U.S., while Premium Pro and Enterprise subscribers will remain ad-free.
The company emphasized that ads will not influence ChatGPT’s responses, and user conversations will remain private from advertisers.
OpenAI faces pressure to generate revenue as only a small fraction of its nearly one billion users pay for subscriptions, while operating costs for AI computing are extremely high.
The move aligns OpenAI’s business model closer to tech giants like Google and Meta, which rely on advertising to fund AI development.
