Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia has filed 10 counts of cyber libel against two Facebook users, Michael Deen Cano and Efren Omayan, for accusing her and her family of corruption, extortion, and abuse of power.
The complaints, submitted to the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI-7), stem from viral posts by Cano and Omayan, which Garcia’s legal team claims contained false and malicious information.
The posts alleged that Garcia and her family had acquired unexplained wealth and attempted to take over businesses in Cebu.
Garcia’s legal team emphasized that such online attacks go beyond free speech and fall under criminal liability.
Meanwhile, Cano dismissed the legal action, calling it an attempt to silence critics.
