The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) has called for urgent action to address the worsening child nutrition and education crisis in the country, a move supported by the Second Congressional Commission on Education (EDCOM II).
The CBCP’s recent Pastoral Letter highlighted alarming statistics, including that 26.7% of Filipino children under five suffer from stunting, and many young children lack access to early education and proper nutrition.
Poor learning outcomes are evident, with nearly half of Grade 1–3 students not ready for their grade level and widespread struggles in basic math and literacy.
Both CBCP and EDCOM II urged the government to fully fund nutrition programs, expand early childhood education, and build child development centers in underserved areas.
EDCOM II emphasized that the nation’s future depends on promptly strengthening child health and education, pledging to work closely with all stakeholders to implement necessary reforms.
