Generative AI, a type of artificial intelligence that can create realistic text, audio, and video, is expected to fuel a wave of sophisticated phishing attacks and scams in 2024, cybersecurity firm Trend Micro warned on Tuesday.
Trend Micro said scammers will use AI to impersonate real people, clone voices, and create deepfake videos to trick victims into revealing sensitive information or sending money. These tactics will make phishing and scams more convincing and harder to detect.
“Generative AI will level up social engineering lures,” said Raymond Almanon, a security specialist at Trend Micro Philippines. “Fake but hyper-realistic audio and video content will be much cheaper to produce, leading to more virtual kidnapping and business email compromise scams.”
Virtual kidnapping involves using a cloned voice to convince someone that a loved one has been kidnapped and a ransom must be paid. Deepfakes, meanwhile, are manipulated videos or audio recordings that make it appear as if someone is saying or doing something they never did.
Trend Micro also warned that AI could be used to create malware that can change itself to avoid detection and “poison” machine learning models by feeding them bad data.
The company urged organizations to invest in robust cybersecurity measures to protect themselves from these emerging threats.
