A Chinese Coast Guard ship fired water cannon and sideswiped a Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) vessel at Pagasa Cay 2 in the West Philippine Sea on Thursday morning, according to the Philippine Coast Guard.
The incident occurred while marine scientists aboard two BFAR vessels were conducting research near the area, less than three nautical miles from Pagasa Island.
The BFAR vessel BRP Datu Sanday was hit twice by the water cannon, sustaining damage to its port bow and smokestack.
Philippine authorities condemned the harassment but vowed to continue marine research operations in the area, asserting the country’s sovereignty over these waters.
The incident reflects ongoing tensions as China asserts aggressive actions in the disputed West Philippine Sea despite a UN tribunal ruling invalidating its claims.
