AZKALS REMAIN OPTIMISTIC DESPITE MISSED OPPORTUNITY

Despite a strong performance, the Philippine Azkals settled for a 1-1 draw with Indonesia in the World Cup/Asian Cup Qualifiers. Goalkeeper Neil Etheridge expressed his disappointment and took accountability for the missed opportunity.

Etheridge apologized for the team’s efforts in the camp and the games, acknowledging that they couldn’t afford to feel sorry for themselves. The Azkals secured only one point in two games during the first qualifying window, which took place at Rizal Memorial Stadium in front of enthusiastic crowds.

With an early goal from Patrick Reichelt, the Azkals seemed poised for a victory that could make up for their previous defeat to Vietnam. However, they were unable to capitalize on their lead, leaving Coach Michael Weiss frustrated.

Weiss, however, disagreed with Etheridge’s regret, highlighting the team’s improved performance and chemistry over the past few years. Reichelt echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the progress they have made.

The Azkals will now have a break before facing a challenging home-and-away series against group leader Iraq in March as they continue their qualifying campaign.
