Australia has announced nearly P1.2 billion in new maritime assistance for the Philippines, including funding for new drones and training for the Philippine Coast Guard to strengthen maritime security.
Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong also criticized China’s recent missile test over the Philippines, calling it “provocative and destabilising” due to the lack of prior notification.
The new assistance is part of Australia’s broader P6.8-billion, 10-year program to expand maritime cooperation with Southeast Asian countries.
Wong reaffirmed Australia’s support for the 2016 South China Sea arbitral ruling and urged all parties to uphold international law.
The announcement came as the Philippines chairs ASEAN and both countries celebrate 80 years of diplomatic relations.
