Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla said fugitive gambling businessman Charlie “Atong” Ang had reportedly left the Philippines through unofficial channels and was believed to be in Cambodia.
Remulla confirmed the reported departure on October 20, raising questions about how Ang allegedly evaded authorities despite multiple arrest warrants.
Ang is facing serious charges connected to the disappearance of 34 cockfighting enthusiasts, commonly known as sabungeros, in 2021 and 2022.
Remulla also claimed Ang may have converted $3 billion into cryptocurrency, although that amount and the alleged transaction have not been independently verified.
Authorities face renewed scrutiny over border security and the manhunt for Ang as efforts to locate him continue.
