ARMY, PNP ASSURE SAFE ELECTIONS IN NEGROS AFTER NPA ENCOUNTER

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) in Negros Island Region (NIR) assured the public that the New People’s Army (NPA) poses no threat to disrupting the May 12 elections despite recent clashes.

Comelec-NIR Director Lionel Marco Castillano emphasized that security forces found no evidence of planned disruptions after a deadly encounter in Kabankalan City, where seven suspected NPA members were killed.

Election officials confirmed that no voting centers were affected by the incident. Castillano also credited the Philippine Army’s vigilance for strengthening election security across the region.

Authorities further assured that sufficient personnel are ready to respond to both election-related concerns and potential natural disasters like a Mt. Kanlaon eruption.
