Rubilen Amit made history by becoming the first Filipino to win the WPA Women’s World 9-Ball Championship, securing the title at the Claudelands Events Centre in Hamilton, New Zealand, on Sunday.
Amit defeated Chen Siming, 3-1, in the championship match, overcoming a previous runner-up finish in 2007 and making it to the semifinals in 2018 and 2019.
The victory earned Amit the top prize of $50,000 (over P2.7 million), adding to her impressive collection of titles, including the 2009 and 2013 10-ball world championships and ten gold medals in the Southeast Asian Games.
Amit’s win was marked by a dramatic comeback, including a pivotal shot that tied the match and a decisive runout in the final set.
Starting the tournament with an early loss, Amit rallied through the loser’s round, defeating several top competitors before clinching the championship.
