Acting Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. may be promoted to full PNP chief with the four-star rank of police general as early as next week, Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla said.
The promotion follows the approval of former PNP chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III’s optional retirement by the National Police Commission, clearing the way for Nartatez to assume the rank traditionally held by a full-fledged PNP chief.
Remulla said a ceremony may be held where Torre will hand over the flag to Nartatez, also serving to honor Torre’s retirement.
The interior secretary emphasized the importance of unity within the police force and restoring relations between the Philippine National Police Academy and the Philippine Military Academy.
Torre, who was removed as PNP chief last August following a dispute with Napolcom, has since become MMDA general manager, while Nartatez continues to lead the PNP in an acting capacity.
