Four of six senatorial candidates who received funds from contractors during the 2025 midterm elections won seats, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) revealed.
Comelec Chairperson George Garcia said the poll body is verifying with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) whether the donors held government contracts, which could violate the Omnibus Election Code.
Violations of Section 95C of the code carry penalties including imprisonment and perpetual disqualification from public office.
The Comelec is also awaiting DPWH confirmation on contractor donations from the 2022 elections, with one ongoing case involving a P30 million donation to Sen. Chiz Escudero.
Garcia hopes for a resolution soon to clarify the situation for both candidates and contractors involved.
