Vice President Sara Duterte did not attend the opening ceremony of the Palarong Pambansa 2024 in Cebu City, which took place amidst her recent resignation as Education Secretary.
The event would have marked her first public appearance alongside President Marcos since leaving her cabinet post.
DepEd spokesperson Michael Poa explained that Duterte visited hospitalized athletes instead to boost their spirits, following reports of dengue cases among participants.
Despite her absence, Duterte conveyed her congratulations and support to the athletes and schools through a statement released by DepEd.
Meanwhile, President Marcos attended the event, praising the athletes and emphasizing the importance of the Palarong Pambansa in nurturing future athletes and leaders.
